Community protest to resist the closure of Ballerrt Mooroop College

12noon - Friday, March 16th
State Parliament, Melbourne City

Marching to the Department of Education
Collins Street

State Government attempts to close Melbourne's last Indigenous school will be resisted with peaceful community protest.

The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development have stated they are closing down the Ballerrt Mooroop College, the last surviving Aboriginal school in Melbourne. The closure announcement was sudden and shocked the school committee and the community. Aboriginal people in the area have worked hard to keep the school, but over the last twelve months the department has taken much of the land away and bulldozed the valuable student and community asset, the Gymnasium/Gathering place.

We affirm that our children deserve the same educational opportunities as every other Victorian child. Our children have the right to be educated in a culturally appropriate setting. The attempted closure of BMC demonstrates the Victorian Education Department does not respect Indigenous culture or care about the educational outcomes of our children.

Our demands:

  • We want to place the entire school under community ownership and management;
  • We want one building, the administration building, to house community education;
  • We want the protection of our Ceremonial Ground and Spirit tree;
  • We want an immediate stop to all demolition and info on what the govt intends to do with the land,Ceremonial Grounds and Spirit Tree.

The Ballerrt Mooroop College Support Group will be staging a peaceful community protest on Friday, March 16 at 12 midday at State Parliament, marching to the Department of Education on Collins St, to resist the closure of Ballerrt Mooroop College and protect our right to teach culture to the next generation.
